Week 1

My fellow kickballers, welcome to The Final Bunt for week 1 of our season! And what a week 1 it was!

Check out all our Game Recaps below!

One of the earlier matches on Sunday featured newcomers Drunkaroos taking on fellow Vertigo rookies The Bagpipers in thier inaugural battle. The other early game that afternoon featured team Morningwood, who decided to let it all hang out by taking team PODYatrists to school. Morningwood got things together to finish their match ahead of the PODYatrists 6-3. Keep your eyes on PODYatrists though, as they'll be looking to rebound from that loss this weekend. The last game to round out the early batch of matches was interesting to say the least. The match featured a spirited I Am McLovin squad that accomplished what was seemingly impossible last season, beating out those Sleazy Bandeezee incumbents during the regular season! Word of advice to I Am McLovin, don't get too excited about your win, there's still a lot of kickball to play this season, and now you've got team Sleazy Bandeezee looking for revenge!

One of the later matches featured my team, Sunkiss Our Balls, who took down a well organized and enthusiastic Everlasting Gobstoppers squad by the score of 6-0. I have to hand it to the E.G.'s, they seemed to improve as the game went on, and I'm sure with time they'll put together a string of wins. DogBalls matched up with The Playground Bullies in a late bout that got both teams off to a fun start for the season. In traditional Playground Bully fashion, the gang came well prepared with their own grill and even dodgeballs for a little bit of post-game fun. Finally the last game of the day featured Menace 2 Sobriety and the SF Natives (featured in our Photo of the Week) in a battle royale. Look for both teams to turn it on as they get the hang of things this season. I'd post more info about our first week's matchups, but I lack a few details here and there. That said, CAPTAINS, see below on how you can help out with our Game Recaps in the future!

Looking back on Sunday's league action, a few things stuck out to me; now, I'm not one to kick mud in anyone's eye, so instead of capitalizing on a certain team's winning streak coming to an end, I'll just go out and say that this could be a season full of parity. With the fall of Sleazy Bandeezee (whoops, my bad) to an up-and-coming squad during the regular season, and Morningwood taking down a tough and impressive new team, the PODYatrists, there's no telling who will come out on top this year. Expect to see a lot of changes in the rankings each weekend, but DO NOT expect that to stop team Morningwood from belching out their annoying team cheer every fifteen minutes.

I doubt I'm alone in stating that this 2008 spring season is all about change. For starters there are a number of new faces, and personalities to get acquainted with. Then there's the competition level, which has gone way up from last fall. Thereafter you might say the organization among every team has improved. There once was a time when only the Playground Bullies showed up with a grill and food to share, now we've got those pesky Morningwooders joining in and ruminations of several other teams considering the idea. This past Sunday I even started to see teams stenciling or ironing on players' names to their team t-shirts (Team Sleazy Bandeezy, and the Playground Bullies). But seeing that just makes me wonder; since when did kickball come to be all about the players and not about the team!? Anywho, along with all the organization among teams, comes the improvement throughout our entire league, with new officer posts being taken up and even a weekly newsletter (eh hem) being published.

Speaking of which, throughout the season we'll be inputting new ideas and concepts to this site. Its going to be a long and competitive spring, so sit tight and bare with us as we adjust to the duties of writing our weekly newsletters. I'd like to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed and will continue to assist with the upkeep and improvement of this website!

And now for the Periodical Prognostications:

1. Old Spice recently came out with a commercial where I guy slides from 2nd base all the way to home plate. That guy's a gamer, however, barely anyone needed to slide last weekend due to a couple blowouts. I predict this week's games will be a lot closer with teams playing better defense. I hope you guys like grass stains.
2. Will lightening strike twice or will Sleazy Bandeezee rebound from their early season loss? Its hard to say, especially since the schedule just changed for the umpteenth time and now they have a bye week. So I guess I won't predict anything for them this week.
3. My "Best Bet" prediction: Kezar pub will be packed on Sunday with drunken kickballers. This week's runner up Best Bet; Menace 2 Sobriety and Drunkaroos will fail to live up to their teams' namesakes. Tsk, tsk.
4. My "Out of Left Field" prediction: The Playground Bullies will have the strongest showing at the bar.

Vote in our Weekly Poll on the right!

Lately there's been some chatter about having a season long flip-cup tournament. All this talk came about because team Morningwood brought a picnic table out to the field this past weekend and challenged anyone within earshot to a game. So, if any of you out there would be down for a "March Madness" style flip-cup tournament extravaganza, please let your opinion be known by voting in our poll.

Check out the Photo of the Week below. Many thanks to our Historians for allowing us to have photos of all the action week in and week out! Click the Slideshow on the right to view more pics in our album!

Sure their team name might be lacking imagination, but darn do they look cute together or what!?

For all you class clowns and wasted cases out there, each week we'll try to post up what we think is the most Ridiculous Photo of the Week based off what we get from our Historians. This week's entry is below! Click the picture, and then post your comments!

This should be a poster at every Army recruiting office across America.

TEAM CAPTAINS, we need your help! First off, we need your help for our Game Recaps! Send in a summary of how your team did against your competition each weekend, and we'll use that to create a short wrap up for your game. Secondly, do you know of a guy and a girl on your team that should be featured as our Kickballers of the Week!? These individuals should be considered vital members of your team, as well as outstanding citizens, and fun people in general. Basically, we'd like for you to nominate anyone who you think would put themselves on the line for your team, and also be someone you could take home to meet the folks! Send in your game summaries and player nominations (for a girl and guy on your team) to TheFinalBunt@gmail.com, please give us some good material to work with and we'll be sure to feature some of it in our weekly newsletters this season!

Before we wrap this newsletter up, we've got a few housekeeping details in our new Quick-Kicks section y'all should know about:
1. Teams with early games; please move off the sidelines and playing field when your game has concluded. Space is at a premium, so let the teams playing later games take the field and without getting in their way.
2. Pick up trash around the field, next Sunday is Earth Day nationwide, so do your part to keep our city clean!
3. Don't forget about our LEAGUE SPONSORED PARTY AT THE SPORTS BASEMENT THIS THURSDAY, APRIL 17th!
4. We received another batch of league t-shirts, find Sarah Ovies on the field to get yours. Due to late registration a few of you might still be missing shirts, talk to Sarah for details Sunday.
5. Teams, please help our refs out by keeping track of your scores during the game.

Come back often, and keep your eyes peeled every Tuesday night when we publish the latest and greatest newsletter for you all to enjoy. Thanks!

Oh, and for anyone who got tired from all that reading; next week's newsletter will be way more streamlined now that we've broken outta our shell. Until then, take two asprin and apply a cold compress.

One item that wasn't mentioned in this week's blog was I am McLovin's complete domination in the flip cup games - we welcome new competition tomorrow!
